Their state is usually abbreviated to NRW, yet the people of North Rhine-Westphalia like to report a long list of superlatives. Their federal state has the most inhabitants, the most universities, the most theatres, the most Bundesliga clubs, the most Carnival revellers, and no other region has undergone a more thorough economic change than NRW – once known for coal and steel, today for culture and high-tech.
